Two Costs, Not One — Distance and Traffic

Most fuel-cost estimates stop at distance: consumption (L/100km) × kilometres × fuel price. That's a real cost, but it's not the whole story — a commute that takes 25 minutes to cover 25km at a steady pace costs meaningfully less than the same 25km taking 45 minutes in stop-start traffic, even though the distance is identical. This calculator prices both parts separately: the distance-based fuel cost, which you'd pay even in perfectly free-flowing traffic, and a traffic-idling premium for time spent stationary or crawling beyond what a free-flowing drive would take. Comparing the total against your actual take-home pay shows what a longer commute really costs relative to your salary, not just in absolute Rand terms.

How the Traffic-Idling Premium Is Calculated

We compare your actual one-way travel time to how long your distance would take at 60km/h — South Africa's default urban speed limit, and a reasonable baseline for uncongested city driving. Any time above that baseline is treated as idling in traffic, and costed using a standard idling fuel-burn formula: engine size in litres × 0.6 per hour for petrol engines, or × 0.45 per hour for diesel engines. If your actual travel time is already at or below the 60km/h baseline for your distance, the idling premium is zero — traffic isn't costing you anything extra beyond the straightforward distance-based fuel. Electric vehicles use a much smaller standstill estimate (about 1.5kWh/hour for climate control), since there's no engine idling to keep running. Wear and Tear — A Real Cost, Even Though Fuel Still Leads

Fuel is usually still the largest single line item in a commute's cost — but wear and tear is a real cost too, and one almost every commute-cost estimate leaves out entirely, including this tool's own previous version. Each vehicle already has a verified annual maintenance estimate on our Vehicle Affordability Calculator, amortised monthly and anchored to a 1,500km/month baseline. We prorate that monthly figure by your actual commute distance — a commute that covers 1,500km/month by itself shows the full monthly maintenance estimate; a shorter commute shows proportionally less, a longer one proportionally more. This is the portion of your vehicle's wear specifically attributable to getting to and from work, not your total maintenance bill for all your driving.

Toll Fees — Enter Your Own, We Don't Estimate

Most South African commutes cross no toll roads at all, and the ones that do vary enormously by route — there's no honest national average to apply. If your commute has a known toll cost, enter your round-trip daily figure and it's added straight into your total; leave it blank and it's treated as zero.

We compare your actual travel time to how long the same distance would take at South Africa's urban speed limit of 60km/h — the regulatory baseline for uncongested driving. Any time beyond that is treated as idling in queues, and costed using the standard idling-fuel formula (engine size in litres multiplied by 0.6 for petrol, or by 0.45 for diesel, per hour). Why does engine size matter for idling cost but not for driving cost?
Driving fuel use is dominated by your vehicle's actual consumption rating (litres per 100km), which already reflects its weight, aerodynamics and drivetrain — engine size alone is a poor predictor of that (a small turbocharged engine can use less fuel per 100km than a larger naturally-aspirated one). Idling fuel use works differently: with the vehicle stationary, consumption is driven almost entirely by how much fuel the engine burns just to keep running, which scales with engine displacement — a bigger engine idles less efficiently regardless of the vehicle's on-road economy.
Does an electric vehicle cost anything to idle in traffic?
Much less than a petrol or diesel vehicle. An EV's motor draws essentially no energy at a complete standstill — there's no engine idling to keep running. The only real draw while stationary is climate control (aircon or heating), which we estimate at around 1.5kWh per hour, a small fraction of what a comparable petrol or diesel engine burns idling for the same hour.
What's the difference between driving cost and idling cost in my results?
Driving cost is the fuel used to physically cover your commute distance, based on your vehicle's real consumption rating — this is the cost you'd pay even in perfectly free-flowing traffic. Idling cost is the extra fuel burned during time spent stationary or crawling in traffic beyond what a free-flowing drive at the same distance would take. The calculator automatically doubles this for the return journey to give you a full round-trip daily cost, assuming your trip home takes roughly as long as your trip to work. If your evening commute is meaningfully longer or shorter, treat the results as a reasonable average rather than an exact figure for both directions.
