Vehicle Affordability Calculator — SA 2026
Enter your salary, pick a make and model from 20 popular South African vehicles, and see everything in one place — the instalment, whether it fits your salary, and the real monthly cost once insurance, fuel and maintenance are added.
South African financial advisers use the 20% rule: your vehicle instalment should not exceed 20% of your gross monthly income. But the instalment is only part of the real cost — insurance, fuel and maintenance add significantly more. Enter your salary and choose a vehicle below to see the full picture, not just the finance repayment.
This calculator replaces our previous per-vehicle pages with one tool covering 20 popular South African makes and models. Enter your salary once, then browse any vehicle and variant — the instalment, affordability verdict and full cost of ownership (insurance, fuel, maintenance) update instantly, so you can compare vehicles against your own real numbers rather than a generic example.
Your Results
Full Monthly Cost of Ownership
Total estimated monthly cost: R— · *Maintenance shown as an amortised monthly estimate (per-service cost spread over a typical 15,000km/12-month interval) — many vehicles include a service plan for the first few years that covers this cost directly. Insurance and fuel/electricity are PayTools' own market estimates, not government-cited figures.

Why the Instalment Isn't the Real Cost
Most vehicle affordability guides stop at the monthly instalment — but that's only one part of what a vehicle actually costs. Comprehensive insurance, fuel or electricity, and scheduled maintenance add materially to the monthly commitment, and vary enormously by vehicle category. A budget hatchback and a double-cab bakkie can have similar instalments but a very different total cost once insurance and running costs are added — this calculator shows all of it together, for the specific vehicle and variant you're considering.
The 20% Rule — and Its Limits
South African financial advisers commonly apply the 20% rule: your vehicle instalment should not exceed 20% of your gross monthly income, aligned with National Credit Act responsible-lending principles. It's a useful starting budget, but it only covers the instalment — a vehicle that clears the 20% rule can still represent a much larger share of your salary once insurance, fuel and maintenance are added. Check the "Full Monthly Cost of Ownership" panel above for the complete picture, not just the instalment line.
How Insurance Varies by Vehicle Category
Insurance is one of the biggest hidden costs in vehicle ownership, and it scales with the vehicle's value and risk profile rather than the instalment. Budget hatchbacks typically insure for R1,400–R1,800/month; mid-range hatches, sedans and compact SUVs for R2,200–R3,000/month; and large bakkies or premium SUVs for R3,500–R5,000/month, reflecting both higher replacement value and, for bakkies specifically, elevated theft risk in South Africa. These are PayTools' own market estimates — always get a real quote from a registered insurer before budgeting around them.
Worked Example — Toyota Hilux Raider, R45,000 Salary, 10% Deposit, 72 Months
| Component | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle price (Raider 4×4 Double Cab) | — | R892,900 |
| Deposit (10%) | R892,900 × 0.10 | R89,290 |
| Loan amount | R892,900 − R89,290 | R803,610 |
| Monthly instalment (72mo, 12.50%) | PMT formula | ≈R15,920 |
| Gross salary needed (20% rule) | R15,920 ÷ 0.20 | ≈R79,602 |
| At R45,000 salary — instalment as % of gross | R15,920 ÷ R45,000 | 35.4% |
| Insurance | Bakkie category estimate | R4,250/month |
| Diesel (1,500km at 7.4L/100km, R24.50/L) | — | ≈R2,720/month |
| Maintenance (amortised) | R3,500 ÷ 12 | ≈R292/month |
| Total monthly cost of ownership | R15,920 + R4,250 + R2,720 + R292 | ≈R23,182/month |
On a R45,000 salary, this Hilux variant's instalment alone (35.4% of gross) already exceeds the 20% affordability rule — the vehicle genuinely needs closer to a R79,600 salary to clear that guideline comfortably. Once insurance, fuel and amortised maintenance are added, the total monthly cost of R23,182 represents just over half of this applicant's gross salary, well above what most advisers would consider comfortable. This is exactly the gap a bare instalment-only calculation hides — a smaller deposit, longer term or a different variant would all change this picture meaningfully.
